Did you know that brushing and flossing may actually reduce your risk for developing stomach cancer? A recent study completed at New York University (NYU) suggests that periodontal disease may be linked to an increased risk for precancerous gastric lesions. In other words, gum disease may be associated with an increased risk for developing stomach sores which may transform into cancer.
The study involved 35 individuals with precancerous lesions and found that 32% of these individuals signs of periodontal disease including higher levels of bacteria associated with periodontitis.
What does this all mean?
The study was not controlled, and it is important to recognize that precancerous lesions do not always develop into cancer. Of course association does not indicate causation; yet, this study highlights that periodontal disease may be linked to cancer including stomach cancer.
What is the bottom line?
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is paramount not only for your oral health but also for your systemic health.
