How to Sleep Well Despite Schedule Changes: Beat Jetlag and Shift Work Like a Pro

We've all been there. You're traveling across time zones or dealing with a shift in your work schedule, and suddenly, your sleep is a mess. Jetlag, daylight savings, or even a hectic work week can make getting a good night’s rest feel impossible. But it doesn't have to be. With the right strategies, you can sleep like a pro no matter what life throws at you.


1. Prepare in Advance

  • The Problem: Jumping straight into a new time zone or schedule is a recipe for sleepless nights.

  • The Fix: Adjust your sleep schedule a few days before your big change. Go to bed earlier or later, depending on the time difference, to help your body ease into the transition. Small shifts can make a big difference.


2. Embrace Natural Light

  • The Problem: Your internal clock is confused, and your body doesn’t know when it’s supposed to feel awake or sleepy.

  • The Fix: Get outside as soon as possible. Natural light is the key to resetting your circadian rhythm. The more sunlight exposure you get during the day, the easier it is to adjust your sleep at night.


3. Napping Right: Less is More

  • The Problem: After a poor night's sleep, the temptation to take a long nap is strong, but it could be sabotaging your rest.

  • The Fix: Stick to a small dose (0.5-1 mg) about an hour before your desired bedtime. This will help nudge your body to adjust without overwhelming it.
